During that salty summer of 2021, things were coming to a head—as they were for a lot of people during the pandemic. We could both feel the gap between where we were at and where we wanted to be. We began a process not unlike the Kon Mari decluttering method. We quit our jobs that were bringing us chronic pain and nihilism. We quit working on relationships that were not bringing us joy. We quit ignoring. We quit waiting to get a dog until it “made sense.” We quit shame. Then after all that quitting—we un-quit the things we wanted. We moved to LA. We splurged on a beloved new rug. And felt a new preciousness to a life we had chosen.
